Thinking of outfitting your windows with some film? Whether you know exactly what you want or you’re just trying to find out what window tint can do for you, you’re in the right place.
Without further ado, here’s Window Tinting 101!
What’s window tinting?
Window films are thin sheets of durable polyester laminate that is treated in different ways to improve the capabilities of regular glass windows. They are made to adhere to the glass on one side and are made to be scratch-resistant on the other. Most of the time, window films are applied to the inside of the glass. There are two main ways that you can get window film. First, you could look for a certified dealer and have him or her source and install it for you. Second, you could purchase a DIY kit at the local home center and install it on your own.
In this article, we’ll be focusing on professionally-installed windows.
What can window film do for me?
You may think that window tints are what celebrities put on their windows to keep people from seeing inside. Although window film can certainly do that, anyone can benefit from installing the material on their windows. The average home is made of 15% glass. Since glass is a very poor insulator, that means that quite a bit of heat is being lost through your glass every single day. Just by adding a layer of extra insulation to your windows, you can drop your energy bills by up to 50%!
Aside from saving money on utility bills, window film is able to fortify the strength of your windows, keep harmful UV rays at bay, reduce glare, and protect your furniture and carpeting from sun-related damage. This means that you can live in a healthier home just by adding some tint! The extra protection that film provides even has the potential to save your life in the case of a storm or an attempted burglary.
What are the types of window film I can choose from?
Window film has taken the market by storm and it’s no surprise that there are plenty of options to choose from. Before you settle on a window film, be sure to ask yourself the following questions:
- Why do you need window film? What is the primary benefit you are looking to take advantage of? (reduce my energy bill, keep my home cooler, protect against UV rays, etc.)
- Is there any certain type of aesthetic look that I’m looking for in my film? (transparent, patterned, reflective, bronze, stained glass, etc.)
- On which windows do I wish to install these films?
- How much am I willing to spend?
After you’ve considered these four questions, you’ll be at a much better place to be choosing a window film. Now all that’s left is to choose an installer!
