How To Prevent Bird-Window Collisions In Your Property
How To Prevent Bird-Window Collisions In Your Property

If you experience birds hitting your windows more often than you’d like, then you are probably looking for a way to prevent this from happening again. Unfortunately, it’s commonplace for birds to collide with windows of skyscrapers, office buildings, and homes. This is because they have a hard time seeing glass; what they see instead is the reflection of the sky and plants!

A strong collision can kill a bird, but most of the time, they are only left stunned and able to recover. However, their recovery may take some time—which makes them fragile for a period, in which other predators may take advantage! You can prevent these incidents by making your windows more visible to birds.

What You Can Do To Prevent Bird-Window Collision

There are many ways you can prevent birds from hitting your windows. The first thing would be to install blinds or shutters and keep them partially closed to help minimise reflection. Another thing is to install frosted or etched windows with a less reflective surface area.

If you don’t want to block out natural light completely, sheer curtains may also help, as long as you keep them closed. You can also minimise illumination at night through shades and shutters, and ensure your lights are turned off when not in use.

Take a more proactive approach by checking all your windows from the outside for visual tunnels that birds assume they could fly through. From there, you can add curtains where needed to eliminate them!

Now, for your exterior windows, you can add decals, windsocks, or even obstacles that can deter birds from hitting your windows. Most property owners install window films—particularly a one-way film to large windows. Be careful not to pick mirrored films because they are reflective, which will not do you nor the birds any good, and could likely worsen the issue!

You can also add taut screens, which can be added to glass patio doors as well. The screens can help break up the reflection. Should the birds collide with the screen, it will still reduce the risks of a fatal injury—which can still be a win in any case!

Some homeowners also add awnings over patio doors and large windows to prevent reflections. Not only will these things help prevent birds from hitting your window, but they can also help increase energy efficiency.

It’s Not All About You

You might think that these window treatments are all for your benefit, but they can also help other living things as well, such as these birds. Bird collision on establishments is a common occurrence, yet as humans, it is our duty to prevent it! After all, these birds are part of Mother Nature that we should take care of.

Moreover, birds hitting your windows with a loud thud and seeing them injured—or worse, dead—isn’t something you want to witness, especially in your property!
